arthur rules
Arthur Rules formed in 1996 by friends Arthur Helden and Arthur Lester. Aside from sharing the same first name, they discovered they also shared enthusiasm for similar sounds in music. They began recording sporadically and released a few casette tapes which have become a minor legend among those in the know. While recording the still unreleased “The Devil in Disgust” Arthur H. brought his 14 year old cousin Olivia Helden in the fold to play drums and percussion. Soon, she was also contributing lyrics and noise loops.

His love for life, his insatiable appetite for self-discovery, his utter disdain for complacency and ignorance and his ability to translate these emotions and experiences into thoughtful lyrics, insanely catchy melodies, pitch-perfect harmonies and virtuosic instrumentation leave many with their mouths agape, totally speechless.

jon of the atom (dead canaries) is impossible to put into any boxes. his music is consistently unpredictable, songs that waltz and bounce back and forth between your headphones, going from rolling indie rock to spaced out folk to experimental sounds of things you feel but can’t quite put into words and further. from time to time i put his albums on to fill some space in my brain – atomic music (2004), holy zombie jesus (2005), my life in groton (2006), and an “off” day for the jews harp christmas caroler (2006) – i always find something i’d never noticed before, a complicated line simply put, or a clarinet that sounds like it has broken free from the band, like radiohead playing motown, or the ghost of woody guthrie rushing for and missing his bus. i once had a dream that he was going to “atomize” my songs and i was smiling. it’s something really special when a musician can sing his way into your dreams. -s. wheelies 2007

dusty charts
According to an unknown and unassuming legend…a young man by the name of Dominae discovered a cassette machine in a park under a tree filled with song-scapes and sound collages. When he played the cassette, he was mesmerized and hypnotized without actually knowing he was altered. Without knowing why, he sat down with his musical instruments and churned out 17 songs of spaced out living room pop and scratchy rock. He took this upon himself mostly except to complete his project he needed to hypnotize his friend Stinger and soulperson Angelas with the cassette. They chimed in with the necessary sparks to make Dominaes transported ideas a reality. Very little was said. With a mindful ear and a sealed mouth he completed his un-imposed mission. He deemed this collection of songs The Quiet and the Shining because he said very little yet he could see everything around him shine. After hearing all the songs once, he (and his assistants) awoke from their haze and remembered nothing. Years later Dominae found a cassette machine in a park under a tree. After listening to the mysterious songs called The Quiet and the Shining he reimagined them under the moniker of Dusty Charts and sought out to find the author of the cassette.

The new album from External World (Judy Shimmin and Robert Levy) visits a similar terrain as the debut release with new, more damaged, measuring instruments and a pleasantly foggy theoretical apparatus (some false datapoints, we think, environment constellation presupposed psychic, p=0.05+/-). Things just don’t make as much as sense as they used to. It’s a big and unexplored world. Here comes our new tiny little experience of it. Run loose with its practical implications, so you can help us find out what we are doing. Combining two distinct song-flows into a single cd, Random Flicker approaches the subject matter using relatively solid structures. Spider Box applies similar kinds of form, but in large part has prostrated itself to the great solution in which all has been dissolved.

Don’t hesitate to make good on a self-fulfilling prophecy. The trails we tread are piled with trials and trinkets to pick up and put into pockets in seconds without a third thought. Without thought or hindsight only the present is apparent and the brain is simply squirming in its case, firing one electric charge after the next until something must inevitably short out and leave one under the impression that he’s been had. We’re consistent and constantly conscious of all that resonates and falls short of expectations. Not being defeated, but defeating the purpose. Wasting time, not motion. Washing grime off the windows, producing the notion that we might need a bit of fresh air. Breathe air, exhale smoke and start again, keeping in mind that the road will wind and go uphill before dropping down and looping around to where it started. And on and on…

Started making music around 1990 . All of us recorded as “Fat Napkin,” with another one of our cousins , R.L. Pratt around 1995-1997 (mostly bedrooms, cellars & a funeral home) . Between 1997-2000 Trever and Scott played in “FM Cowboys,” while Joshua and Ryan played with the brilliant and beautiful Craig Murray (currently Discipul & Civilian) and Scott Steele (currently Minor Broadcast) in the criminally underappreciated “Holler Mayhem”. FM Cowboys and Holler Mayhem played together around Central NY in bars, cafes and beer parties as well as the “Old Richland School”. There has been plenty of foggy jam sessions & ecstatic noise fests in between to numerous & intoxicating to recall. Then in 2008 , Old North. Trever and Scott wrote and recorded as a duo from 8/08 – 5/09 when we welcomed Joshua to contribute.

Periwinkle Periscope, an independent musical project from Cozy Home Records. All recordings were made spontaneously at home using an eight track recorder and a variety of instruments including casio keyboard, mandolin, finger piano, guitars, drums, and a variety of household objects. The result is a unique variety of rythyms, tones and themes unbound by traditional musical conventions. Enjoy!

The Playground
Let’s start with the boring stuff then build our way up to the glamorous life style that I live today. Michael Douglas Crowther was born October 26th 1983, an accident that occurred after his parents went to chucky cheese with their first two children, got drunk on beer and screwed behind the stage where the robotic mouse rock and roll band played. After coming to terms with being a complete accident, Michael grew up like most kids do and lived a normal suburban childhood. After graduating high school Michael headed westward like every suburban kid from the midwest to give “Higher” learning a chance. This escapade ended three years later when four cops wrestled Michael to the ground for acting strangely in an empty parking lot. They tied Michael up like a suit case and threw his ass in a paddy wagon. This seemed like a very bad thing at the time, but trying to piss on a cop’s leg turned out to be a blessing for Michael. After dealing with certain legal obligations he packed his bags, headed back to the great city of Minneapolis and has been diligently recording shit in his bedroom ever since.

A story as endless as time, it is. one mind, five brains, twenty hands, and a shit load of complications. Once every other day has turned the once pale vegetables in the laundry basket into audiologically colored splashed fresh crisp confusion. I run my hand along the wall where the light switch used to be and get bit by a snake that crawled in through the house from a tree just outside the window. It throbs with the pain of a hundred year’s conflict and alas my friend’s and I struggle to enjoy each other’s company. It is only then that I gain focus and put the four track in a vacuum by the old road. An old man told me that the top shelf is too high, so I told him he better start liking different things then. And so when asked if we’re clean, we do try to cover up the dust that is all consuming. We can only do what we can and seldom do. We are the real burnouts from which there is no escape.

In reality though it was usually scrambling to get some cheeb and hoping to still have enough bucks left over to cop some records from the basement of The Last Unicorn (Utica, NY area indie record store. More on that later…) and maybe a slice of pizza. And… band practice.

The Wheelies are in trouble. They can’t play their instruments properly. They are so wasted they are incapable of operating even the most basic recording equipment. They are too paranoid to play live. They can’t find a Ringo that fits. Their singer keeps jumping out of trees in his pants and quitting the band. Their lead guitarist has developed a phobia of guitars. Their bassist is incapacitated with a serious case of sand in his eye. Moppy is possessed and lost in transit. They have a band member who doesn’t even know he is a band member. Bob Dylan won’t return their phone calls. In a nutshell, they are totally fucked. All that’s left for you to do is sook the bools, find a comfortable position far enough away from the fall-out zone, and listen while the whole thing falls spectacularly to pieces.

Whoopin Cough Jonny is best known as the former singer/guitarist of the legendary Utica, NY band THE CHROME GHOSTS….Whoopin Cough has spent the last several months writing new material for his debut album to be released on a low budget record label with little to no promotion, but that don’t matter cause the songs are kickin man!!!! An extraordinary mix of psychobilly, cow-punk, and surf rock sounds recorded in a bonafide professional recording studio and made to sound as if it was low budget analog on purpose…..Rolling Stoned Magazine calls Whoopin’ Cough “Extra-Ordinary” and several people in Rome, NY agree….When Whoopin’ Cough Jonny takes the stage with his partner in grime and drummer known simply as “Mr. Business”, shit hits the fan, shit gets broken, and people start talkin shit….”Why don’t they have a bassist?” just because….
