I got lei’d in hawaii was the burnouts first album and first attempt at crafting what later became known as home pop.  It features tedious tape to tape overdubbing from the bedroom dating as far back as their senior year in high school, with subject matter also dating back to the senior year of high school; mainly girls, jealousy, and drugs. Though you won’t hear any of these songs playing on your radio any time soon, it offers a glimpse in to the super lo-fi origins of the Real Burnouts.

The Whole Sad Story

The follow up to 1998’s I got lei’d in Hawaii, the whole sad story further plunges into the home pop recording formula again using mostly tape to tape overdubs.  Verse chorus first verse chorus end, all with subject matter remarkably similar to their previous album, maybe just expanded slightly. The songs are very tangible but almost seem to lack the deep rooted intellect that was supposedly sewn in. however, there remains some clever word play, and raw teenage emotion.

you’ve got more than you think you do is the third album by the real burnouts.  ditching the home pop keyboard arrangement, it features the band experimenting with a variety of instruments for the first time.  there is an unspoken concept of “college”  with this album, though the band barely attended more than one semester. the subject matter continues to be that of drugs, girls, and jealousy, however, with a few more notches in the belt as well as dealing with death for the first time, which apparently actually does happen.

the penis and vagina syndrome is the fourth album from the real burnouts and is a vast collection of songs from the year of 2002. its barely on the lo-fi radar.  most songs are only four tracks with some diamonds and bizarre “spoken word” in the rough.  trying more to concentrate on life and ponder all of its meaning and goofiness through recorded song with some real life stuff happening along the way.

its not all hot chocolate is the fifth album from the real burnouts with songs dating back to the year of 2003.  many of these songs have never seen the light of day.  its a mash up of keyboard home pop and dry jangly guitar indie pop rock.  never content with a running order, it spent most of its life on the cutting room floor, however, not to take away from some of the catchy emotional tunes.  never really getting to the bottom of anything, it just asks a lot of questions.
